Mexican Wolves at the Cincinnati Zoo

I was very excited to see these Mexican Wolves at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden on February 2nd, 2025. I went with my mother that was visiting me from Alaska, and with my fiance Nick.

Mexican Wolves are the most endangered subspecies of wolves. They originate from Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico.

There was one off a ways from the others, napping just as contentedly. There was a sign posted that these individuals are still figuring out their dominance dynamics and not to notify them of any wounds from fighting–that they were aware. Fortunately, on that day, we didn’t see any visible injuries.

When wolves are kept together artificially in captivity, there tends to be infighting and a rigid dominance structure not seen in the wild. Given the extreme precariousness of Mexican Wolf populations, however, captivity is the only reason they are not extinct.

While at the Cincinnati Zoo, we also saw a tiger and more.
